CODE OF CO-OPERATION
In the first two weeks of the school year, teachers and students work hard at getting to know each other and they develop common understandings about why we come to school, what makes a good learning environment and how behaviour and attitudes can affect the way we and others learn. Every class works co-operatively on the development of their own Code of Co-operation.
The Code of Co-operation replaces our usual classroom rules and consequences with a much greater emphasis placed on the children being part of the process. Through a series of lessons, each class writes about and discusses a Purpose Statement (Why do we come to school?), a Vision Statement (What sort of place do we want our classroom to be?), the school's values, attitudes and behaviours that you would expect to see in a classroom and the consequences that occur if children dont behave in an acceptable way.
Our staff and students constantly talk about and demonstrate
respect, co-operation, responsibility, safety, learning and honesty because these are the key values that underpin our school's Code of Co-operation. A successful and happy classroom and school is one in which there is a mutual understanding between students, staff and parents about what it takes to make a safe, enjoyable and challenging learning environment. For this reason, each class talks about and develops their own Code of Co-operation at the beginning of the school year which is then implemented and followed for the remainder of the school year. All students, parents and staff are aware of what is expected and how the school's values can be demonstrated in positive ways. Everyone is also aware of the consequences for not behaving in acceptable ways. The Codes of Co-operation are displayed prominently in each classroom and a copy is also distributed to all parents with the Term One Parent Information Letter. Our student leaders, Junior School Councillors, House Captains and Peer Mediators continue the process and develop a school wide Code of Co-operation which outlines the overall expectations and tone of the school in all situations beyond the classroom.
Throughout each school year we continuously revise and update programs and activities that will encourage children to take greater responsibility for their own behaviour whilst working as part of a co-operative, safe, learning team in the classroom and in the playground.
